Flushing Syringe (Sodium Chloride)
Pre-filled sodium chloride (NaCl 0.9 %) syringes are used in conjunction with intravenous treatments, particularly during antibiotic administration. Their role is to:
- Flush the IV line between antibiotic doses to ensure the full medication dose has been administered and no residue remains in the tubing.
- Maintain catheter patency by preventing clots or blockages.
- Avoid interactions or incompatibilities between different medications administered through the same line, if applicable.

Flush the catheter with a pre-filled NaCl syringe at the frequency recommended by your nurse.
- Disinfect the catheter cap with an alcohol swab for 15 seconds:
- the top and sides.
- Allow to air-dry for 30 seconds (do not blow, fan or wipe).
- Connect the syringe to the catheter cap:
- Hold the cap between your thumb and index finger.
- Insert the pre-filled NaCl syringe and turn to the right.
- If there are clamps on the catheter or its extension, open them.
- Inject slowly using short, gentle pushes while maintaining control of the plunger.
- Close the clamps if applicable
- Disconnect the syringe by turning it to the left.
